What a location unit hires
The set moves, and the line moves with it.
A good part of what goes out in this city goes to a production rather than to an event. A location unit takes over a street, a lobby or a park for a handful of scenes, needs the public held back from the camera line, a holding area for background performers and a clear path for the crew carrying gear — and then packs up and does it all again at the next address. The equipment stays the same across the shoot; what changes is the location and the shape of the perimeter, so the hire is built to be struck and rebuilt rather than set once and left.
Holding areas for background
Belt posts mark out a waiting pen for extras and stand-ins, so the people the assistant directors need are gathered in one place and out of the shot.
A soft line on the pavement
Posts and belts steer passers-by around the camera without closing a sidewalk outright, and they lift out of the way when the unit wraps.
Barricade round the base camp
Interlocking steel around the trucks, the catering and the equipment carts, where the perimeter has to hold rather than simply guide.
Where we deliver
Studio lots, city streets and the valley beyond.
Drops go to studio stages, to base camps set up in parking lots and to the street locations a unit moves between over the course of a shoot. Each of delivery, setup and collection is costed by itself on the quote, and a unit that relocates has each move priced against the one hire rather than raising a fresh order for every address.

Deliveries go to the kinds of place a Vancouver shoot actually uses:
- the sound stages and studio lots in Burnaby and along the Fraser
- base camps in stadium and shopping-centre parking lots
- the heritage streets and back lanes of the old downtown
- the seawall, the beaches and the parks along the water
- university campuses dressed to stand in for somewhere else
- office lobbies and hotel floors let out for a scene
Send the locations from the call sheet in the order the unit reaches them, and each drop is planned to meet the trucks where they park.
Before the shoot
What a production office asks us.
- What does it cost to hire stanchions for a Vancouver shoot?
- Day rates are $19, three-day rates $29 and weekly rates $39, whether you take velvet rope on gold posts or retractable belt on black ones. A unit shooting on several locations pays for each move between them as a separate line, and delivery, setup and collection are priced the same way — itemised next to the rate rather than folded into it.
- Can the equipment follow the unit from one location to the next?
- Yes. The hire is one count for the whole shoot and the moves between locations are quoted against it. Send the locations in the order they are scheduled and say where the trucks are expected to park at each, and the drops are planned to the base camp rather than to the street address.
- What works best for a background holding area?
- Retractable belt posts, as a rule. They mark out a pen in a parking lot, a church hall or a hotel function room without anything being fixed down, and a belt unclips to open a gap when the group is called to set. A sign frame at the entrance takes a printed panel so the holding area is easy to find.
- Will a post-and-belt line keep the public back on a city sidewalk?
- It guides people around a camera position and makes the boundary obvious, but it is not built to stop someone set on crossing it, and the conditions the location was approved under decide how much of it you need. Where a perimeter genuinely has to hold — around the trucks, the generator or the catering — steel barricade is the right item instead.
- Can the posts be dressed for the camera?
- Black posts with black belt disappear on most streets. When the line belongs in the scene — a premiere, a club door, a hotel entrance — velvet rope strung on chrome or gold posts plays the part. Post wraps and printed belts can also be produced for the order if the art department wants invented branding on them.
