What Oakville hires
A gallery line on turf the greenkeeper has to answer for.
Tournament days at the clubs around this town produce a very specific brief: a rope that keeps spectators a set distance from a tee box, runs along the edge of a fairway and wraps behind a green, then gets moved as play moves. On a course the first conversation is always with the superintendent, and the first question is always what goes into the ground. A traditional gallery rope is threaded through stakes; nothing we hire is staked. Our posts stand on weighted bases, which leave no holes and can be walked off the turf at the end of each day — the trade is that a base has to sit somewhere flat and firm, which a fairway edge usually is and a bank beside a bunker usually is not.
Rope, not belt, on the course
Posts with rope between them read as a gallery line and do not pull themselves together the way a retractable belt does over a long span.
Weighted bases on firm ground
Tee surrounds, cart paths and fairway edges take a base well. Soft collars and slopes around the greens are where the line is planned more carefully.
Barricade at the clubhouse
Steel sections around the practice area, the entrance and the hospitality marquee, where the crowd gathers rather than follows play.
Where we deliver
The lakeshore, the north of town and the clubs between.
A course is not a loading dock, and most drops here go to a maintenance yard or a cart barn rather than to the clubhouse door. Delivery, setup and collection are quoted as separate lines: a tournament committee with volunteers often takes the equipment at the yard and ropes the holes itself, and a club without the hands for it has the gallery lines put in by us.

Deliveries go to the places an Oakville tournament or event uses:
- the championship courses and private golf clubs around town
- clubhouse terraces and the marquees on their lawns
- the harbour and the parks along the lake shore
- the historic downtown streets and squares
- hotel ballrooms and conference rooms near the highway
- the arts centre and the community centres in each neighbourhood
Tell us which holes are roped, where the maintenance yard is and who from the grounds staff should meet the van, and the order is planned hole by hole.
Worth asking
What an Oakville tournament usually asks first.
- What is the rate for renting rope stanchions for a golf day in Oakville?
- A gold post with velvet rope is $19 a day, $29 for three days and $39 for a week; a black post with retractable belt costs the same. A tournament with practice rounds before it tends to suit the three-day or weekly rate. Delivery to the course, setting the gallery lines and taking them up afterwards are all quoted as separate lines.
- Do the posts need to be staked into the turf?
- No — nothing on our hire list is driven into the ground. The posts stand on weighted bases, so there are no holes for the grounds staff to repair and the line can be lifted off the grass each evening. On soft ground or on a slope, tell us, because the base needs a firm footing and the line may have to follow a path instead.
- Will the bases mark a fairway or a green?
- A base spreads its weight across a flat plate, so on a firm tee surround or fairway edge it leaves very little behind. We still keep bases off putting surfaces and out of the soft ground at the edge of a green; the gallery line there usually runs a step further back, which the superintendent normally prefers anyway.
- Can the gallery ropes be moved between rounds?
- Yes. The posts lift and the ropes unclip, so a line behind a tee on the first day can be walked to a green on the second without anything new being sent. If the course expects to reshape the lines a lot, say so and the order goes out with spare posts and rope.
- Which rope colour suits a golf course?
- Green disappears into the fairway and keeps the photographs clean; navy and black read clearly without shouting. Red is a choice for the clubhouse entrance or a sponsor area rather than out on the course, and white is the fifth colour we hire out.
