What it is for
Standard stanchion bases stand about an inch and a half off the floor with a straight edge which is exactly the shape that catches a shoe. The low profile base solves it by sloping from the post down to a thin edge so a foot rides over it instead of stopping against it. The look is lighter too. Against a polished floor the post appears to stand on nothing which is why designers reach for this one in spaces where the crowd control is supposed to be felt rather than seen. Weight stays where it should be so the post does not become easier to knock over in exchange.
