Specifying to own
Buy for the fourth year, not the first week.
Three things decide whether a bought set is still in service when the building is repainted. Bases have to suit a floor that gets cleaned every night rather than swept once at the end of a show. Belts have to be replaceable on their own, because the cassette wears long before the post does. And the model has to still exist, which is why a set bought out of a catalogue that gets restocked beats a set bought out of whatever was on a pallet.
Replaceable cassettes
The belt is the part that fails. A post whose cassette can be swapped is a post that lasts; one where it cannot is a post you replace whole.

Rubber-ringed on stone and terrazzo, cast iron where the traffic is heavy, magnetic where the route has to disappear overnight.
A finish that can be topped up
Buying six more next year only works if the finish still matches. Stock colours rather than a one-off run, unless the whole set is printed.
Worth asking
What a Toronto fit-out asks before it orders.
- Can we add to the set later and have it still match?
- That is the reason to buy out of a catalogue rather than a clearance. Stock finishes and stock belt colours are restocked, so six more posts next year are the same posts. A one-off printed run is the exception — if the belts carry your artwork, order the spares with the first batch rather than afterwards.
- Do you sell replacement belts and cassettes on their own?
- Yes, and they are the part most people come back for. The belt wears out several times over before the post does, so a cassette swap is the normal repair rather than a replacement post. Tell us the model and the belt length and we will match it.
- What holds up on a stone or terrazzo lobby floor?
- A base with a rubber ring rather than a bare metal foot, because the marking shows on polished stone within weeks and does not come out. Where the route has to clear completely overnight, a magnetic base and a floor plate leave nothing behind at all.
- We need a route a cane user can find. What does that mean here?
- A twin belt post, with the lower belt low enough to be detected rather than stepped over. It is a different model rather than an accessory, so it belongs in the specification from the start. Send the route and we will mark where the twin posts have to sit.
- Is it worth buying if we only use the line a few times a year?
- Sometimes not, and we will say so. The honest test is whether the equipment would be stored somewhere you already pay for. If it would sit in a rented unit between uses, renting is usually the better arrangement and we quote that instead.
