What Victoria hires

An announcement is a room arranged for the cameras.

Victoria is the provincial capital, and in a capital a lot of corporate business ends in an announcement: a company presenting an investment, an industry association making its case, a partnership signed with reporters in the room. That room has a shape of its own. A lectern and a backdrop stand at the front, invited guests sit in the middle, cameras and reporters take the back or one side, and the people on the programme have to reach the stage without wading through either group. So the line here is seldom a queue. It keeps three groups in their own parts of one room, so that the pictures show the speaker and the backdrop rather than somebody standing in the aisle.

A media area with a clear view

Belt posts mark out a pen for cameras and reporters, with a straight sightline to the lectern that no guest wanders into.

A route for the speakers

A roped aisle from the side door to the stage lets the people on the programme arrive at the front without cutting through the seating.

A front row that is in every shot

Polished posts with velvet rope across the foot of the stage, because whatever stands there appears in each photograph taken of the speaker.

Where we deliver

From the downtown core out to Sidney and Sooke.

Most announcement rooms are downtown or close to it — a hotel ballroom, a conference floor, an office atrium — and the drop goes in through the service door alongside the audio-visual crew. Delivery, setup and collection appear as three separate lines on the quote. For a press event the setup line deserves a look, because the media area and the speakers’ aisle are placed against the stage and the camera positions, which is simpler to do with the room plan in hand than to describe over the phone.

Deliveries go to the kinds of rooms a Victoria announcement uses:

  • the waterfront conference centre downtown and its meeting rooms
  • hotel ballrooms and boardrooms around the inner harbour
  • office lobbies and atriums in the downtown core
  • lecture theatres and foyers on the university campus
  • the public squares and forecourts used for outdoor announcements
  • recreation centres and halls across the West Shore

Send the room plan with the lectern, the seating and the camera positions marked, and the count comes back area by area rather than as one figure for the room.

Announcements

What a Victoria press event asks.

What does stanchion rental for a press conference in Victoria cost?
A black post with retractable belt and a gold post with velvet rope are priced the same: $19 for one day, $29 for three days and $39 for a week, per post with its belt or rope. An announcement room is counted from its plan — the front of the stage, the media area and the speakers’ aisle — and bringing the posts, placing them and taking them away each sit on their own line beside the rate.
How is the media area kept apart from invited guests?
With a run of belt posts round the back or one side of the room, open at one end so camera operators can carry tripods in and out. Set the pen square to the lectern and behind the last row of seats, and the cameras look past the guests rather than through them. Mark on the plan where each camera will stand, and the posts are counted from it.
Can the speakers reach the stage without walking through the seating?
Yes. A roped aisle runs from a side door or a holding room to the steps of the stage, so the people on the programme arrive at the front in view of the cameras rather than threading between chairs. Velvet rope suits that route, since it is the part of the room the photographs follow.
Where do reporters question the speaker after the announcement?
Usually in a scrum to one side of the stage. A short rope line marks where the speaker will stop and where the press stand, so the questions happen in one place while invited guests leave by the main door. Tell us whether the scrum is planned inside the room or in the foyer, and the posts are split between the two.
Will the posts show up in the photographs?
The ones at the front will, so they are worth choosing. Gold posts with a red or navy rope read well across the foot of a stage; black belt posts suit the media area and the doors, out of the main shot. Belts can also be printed with the company’s name, which turns the one line nobody can crop out of a photograph into part of the branding.
