What Montreal hires
Sized for the busiest night, not the quiet one.
A summer festival here is usually a street that has been closed and turned into a site for a few days, and the crowd on it is never steady. It is thin while it is light, it swells when the headline act comes on and it is heaviest at the moment everyone tries to leave by the same corner. A hire sized to the average leaves the gates short at exactly the point they matter, so the count is set against the peak: how many entrances there are, how wide each has to be when it is full and where the crowd has to be split before it reaches the stage.
Counted for the peak
Gate lines and stage fronts are specified for the fullest the site will be. A section left stacked on a quiet night does no harm; a gate that runs short on a packed one does.
A street turned into a site
Interlocking steel closes off the ends of the road and marks the service lanes, so the closure reads as an enclosure rather than as traffic that has stopped.
Stage barrier across the front
Braced aluminium sections with a forward base plate and a step for staff, bolted into one continuous front where the audience presses hardest.
Delivery across the island
The island, the bridges and the South Shore.
A closed street has no loading dock, so a festival drop is planned around the barricade itself: where a truck may stand once the road is shut and which end of the site has to be enclosed first. Delivery, setup and collection each carry a separate line on the quote, and on a street site setup is the line most organisers take, because a perimeter started from the wrong end has to be unhooked and turned round.

Drops go to the kinds of site a Montreal summer is held on:
- the closed streets and squares of the downtown festival district
- the island parks out in the river
- the quays of the old port and the squares of the old town
- the stadium grounds in the east end
- the convention centre and the hotel forecourts downtown
- the borough parks and the neighbourhood street fairs
Send the closure map you have been issued with the entrances marked on it, and the barricade is counted against the fullest the site will get.
Questions
Asked by festival organisers in Montreal.
- What do posts and ropes rent for in Montreal?
- Either published set — a gold post with a velvet rope, or a black post with a retractable belt — runs at $19 for one day, $29 across three days and $39 for a full week. Barricade, stage barrier, delivery, setup and collection are costed one by one, which matters on a festival street where the steel usually outnumbers the posts.
- How do we size a barricade order for a festival?
- From the fullest night rather than the average one. Mark each entrance, each exit and the stage front on the site map, and say which of them the crowd uses all together — usually the exits when the last act finishes. The count comes back against those pinch points, with the quiet stretches of fence filled in around them.
- Can barricade close a street without being fixed to the road?
- Yes. Galvanized sections rest on flat feet and hook end to end, so a run across a closed road holds as one line with nothing drilled into the asphalt. Where the street has a camber or a kerb, mention it, because sections are laid differently across a slope.
- Do we need a stage barrier as well as barricade?
- If there is a stage with a standing audience in front of it, yes. Barricade is built to enclose a site; a stage barrier is built to take the push at the front, with a base plate running forward under the audience and a step behind for staff. On a street site the two usually meet at the corners of the stage, so send its position with the closure map.
- Can the order grow if the lineup draws a bigger crowd?
- Yes. More sections, posts and sign frames can be added to the order already out and are collected with it at the original rates. Tell us at the brief stage which nights are expected to be the fullest, so the extra is planned for those rather than discovered at the gate.
